Primary Care
  • Reassurance / patient education, weight reduction, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, advice re. cushion-soled footwear, simple analgesics / NSAIDs
  • Assessment of function important eg. deteriorating walking distance / difficulty putting on shoes / cutting toe nails
  • X-Ray: crude screening procedure for infection / tumour/ avascular necrosis (normal X-Ray does not exclude above diagnoses) Will an X-Ray change management?
Major clinical indicators of receiving hip replacement
  • Pain duration
  • Pain severity (night pain)
  • Use of a walking aid
  • Major functional limitation
  • Restriction of internal rotation
  • Marked OA on X-Ray
